To commemorate the recent passing of 9/11 I cut out a small item from The Metro which I’d like to share.
Open MS word.
Type in Q33 NY – the flight number of the first plane to hit the twin towers.
Make this 48pt
Make the font Wingdings

Spooky huh?
(This is the pick of the geeky conspiracies btw)

June the 10th 2009 is a day that will be short remembered, it is marks the occasion of 2W’s first meeting to be held at the Broadway bar. Long have we resisted the draw of their good selection of refreshments and digital media glitz, but no longer. Thanks to regular attendee Nick (there are at least three Nicks so I leave it to you to establish who exactly is the taboo breaker) we will be trolling up to the Broadway Bar from 6:30pm onwards to chill out, chat about industry matters and probably a few things that are off script too. All are welcome; 2W is after all the antidote to networking.
If you fancy nailing your colour to the mast or just taking a gander at the confirmed attendees then point your browser at FaceBook and type Second Wednesday Nottingham into your search box. (I gather one needs an account to play in this arena)

“What’s FB when it’s at home”, was a cutely titled email that came winging my way after I shared this amazing leap forward. Well for those of you who aren’t hip with the kids FB stands for FaceBook and 2W now has boldly gone where millions have gone before and set up a page (Thanks to Nick for being the FB guardian for us)
This surprising action followed a chat at May’s meeting to see what web 2.0 could do for a bunch of web heads that are too tight to spend any money. Other things on the horizon are newsletters and of course twitter.
On a personal note, I deleted my FB account about a year ago and had to rejoin to sign up to 2W. I must say, things have certainly become a lot more invasive and sophisticated that those early days.

Well not really ~ May’s meeting at Bar Deux featured a good old fashioned pub quiz and raffle in aid of the Sherwood Rise Residents’ Association annual community festival. 2W members should feel triply proud – no member won anything in the raffle, no member came anywhere near winning the pub quiz and members helped raise £64 towards a good cause. In this age of economic downturn and rising levels of lip service CSR it is heart warming to know that the 2W crew can still stand up when it matters.

Intel has been slapped with an EU fine of 1.06bn euros ($1.45bn; £948m) for anti competitive trading between 2002 and 2007. What boils down to back handers to manufacturers and retailers to push Intel above its competitors is behind the fine.
Parallels could be drawn between Intel’s behaviour and Microsoft’s enforced dominance of the browser market. The parallels break down quickly though because Intel’s chips work and Explorer doesn’t quite work with standard code.
Whatever the situation surrounding the EU fine the message sent can only be good. Anti competitive trading breeds contempt. Innovation should drive an ever better customer experience in computing, both personal and business, rather than economic bullying.

It’s the beginning of summer and looking out of the window I probably credit it. Of course it’s raining. Still the clematis is out and the grass needs mowing so maybe there’s something to this summer malarkey.
2W has been held in town somewhere for every event (bar one held at the University of Nottingham’s Staff Club, great cheese for those of you who remember!) and in light of credit crunch, supporting local businesses and the fact that when I did a quick trolley around there are not quite so many NG1 Lace Market addresses as there used to me (signs of a maturing industry maybe, not in need of the trappings to deliver?) I thought we ought to give a quiet out of town bar the benefit of our bucks.
May is the month of Bar Deux – http://www.hoteldeux.com/ – just off Sherwood Rise. Plenty of free parking, well kept beers and comfortable. As a bonus May 13th is also the day that the local resident’s association are holding a quiz night from 9:30pm to raise money for a community festival which they hold each October. If we do this right then 2W members could end up profiting by more than great chat and contacts but by strolling away with the local’s grand quiz prize to boot!
I figure we should do the quiz but ensure that we split up to team with 2Weders that we don’t normally hang with.
As we are out of town what say we begin at about 6:30?
I look forward as ever to seeing you again and meeting any curious new digital folk who want to know what the antidote to furious networking is really like.

The trouble with promises made after 9pm in the convivial atmosphere of a cosy bar is that they have the knack of evaporating overnight.
Well here I am a week or so later and my promise to post the best pro forma community constitution has rematerialised like condensation.
Please find below a copy of my favorite community group constitution. This is for those who engaged in the discussion about how to raise funding for non commercial but publicly beneficial projects.
Constitution for small groups – Dec 2007 (in Word format)

It’s not often that a blog item really hits the mark (especially the ones I write) but this one written by Antony Smith over at Alight was spot on in my opinion. Check over your shoulder to see if you can chill for five minutes, slump in your chair and enjoy this short muse on the Cadbury’s eyebrow advert.

March 2W came and went in a blaze of the resident jazz duo at Shaw’s, Two Jazz.
Nice.
I guess about fifteen souls were present with topics of conversation spanning:
- The rise of WordPress as a CMS
- The good geeks alphabet
- The cultural shift between being self-employed and working for a large agency
- How to bid for funding for a non-commercial project
- The rise in importance of CSR and how the industry could benefit from this
- You Tube must-sees
- The overload of formal networking
Yet again 2W proved its mettle by being more chill and chat than booze and brag and proved to be all the more eloquent for it. As far as I am aware the furthest travelled delegate yesterday pootled in from Derby – so this big 2W big up goes to the Derby Massive.
I would like to throw this blog open to 2W attendees. If you would like to become a co-editor then drop me a line by leaving a comment. Nail your colours to the mast!
The next 2W is on Wednesday April 8th 2009 at Shaw’s Bar from 6pm. By that time we should all have recovered from the end of the last tax year and face the coming period full of prospect, hope and anticipation – maybe.
